Last fall, no less than 82 startups from 17 different countries participated in the BNF funding call. We have curated a selection of 12 remarkable startups that, in our opinion, are definitely worth exploring and keeping an eye on!!
Nature principles
Nature principles pioneer the circular production of biobased chemicals by using unique fermentation technologies. They produce lactic acid from waste streams using innovative fermentation technology to develop biodegradable products. This Dutch startup is spin off from Delft University technology and their drive is to help solve the environmental problems connected to global warming in the chemicals industry.
Bluana foods
Bluana foods is a revolutionary seafood tech startup from Italy. ‘The sea, the great unifier, is man’s only hope.’ Now, as never before, the old phrase has a literal meaning: we are all in the same boat. Bluana foods offers a range of sustainable, plant based alternatives to traditional seafood. Crafted with precision to mimic the taste and texture of salmon sushi and tuna sashimi.
Mago bio solutions
Mago bio solutions close local cycles and enhance nature's resilience with Mago's energy-positive compost machine. The eComposter is a unique method that turns organic waste into high quality compost fertilizer and renewable energy. Zero waste, 100% value. Ideally eComposting is complementary to catering companies, health care institutions and agricultural business.
Yoshi Foods
Yoshi Foods is founded by two ambitious Belgium entrepreneurs, Julian & Jonas. They are chasing the objective of eliminating all packaging in the food industry and have a strong focus on developing cutting edge food coatings. Yoshi Foods aims to provide solutions to protect products against moisture and bacterial growth. A real specialist in protecting powdered food and pharmaceutical products.
Zereau - KRNWTR
Zereau - KRNWTR upgrades your drinking habit.Their mission is simple: honest and delicious drinks without unnecessary single-use packaging. They can deliver a Dutch design water tap for catering and offices directly connected to your water pipe. Zereau drinks are powered by KRNWTR makers of sustainable water taps.
Pack2earth
Pack2earth is an impressive new technology from Spain for the circular economy. They make food-grade compostable packaging materials from plant matter. Their bio-based materials are compostable at home together with other organic waste. From the toxin free compost new plant life can grow.
Well Fruited
Well Fruited aims to build the future of fruit. They unleash the full power of fruit by producing fruit juices and smoothies with 100% fruit in the UK. Delicious with less calories, sugar and high in fibres. ‘Not a juice, not a smoothie, liquid fruit’.
Second nature
Second nature builds a model for a scalable neighbourhood kitchen that provides the local community with access to healthy, affordable and sustainable meal subscriptions. They cook vegan ready-to-eat meals with imperfect ingredients and work with a reusable bowl system. Their first pick-up locations are in Amsterdam and they hope to open more locations around the city.
Northern wonder
Northern wonder coffee free coffee looks like coffee, tastes like coffee and you can brew it like you're used to. They make coffee without beans, from a botanical quest of melanges and fermentation, to high-tech optimisation of blending and roasting. B'zeos
B’zeos is the Next Generation of Packaging Inspired by the Oceans. They are on a mission to create a sustainable and regenerative alternative to replace fossil fuel-based plastics. B’zeos uses seaweed as an ingredient for bio-based and fully home compostable single-use packaging, because the future of packaging is plastic free.
